With the New Year here, many of us are still thinking about resolutions and how to overcome certain obstacles in our lives. Others will most likely try to focus on bettering their health. In any event, most of us are unaware that January is Thyroid Awareness month. During this time, we want to remind individuals with thyroid issues to ensure that it’s functioning properly. Remember, your thyroid plays a significant role in the functions of other vital organs. Consequently, if your thyroid isn’t functioning properly, there’s a good chance you aren’t either. If you notice some of the signs such as memory problems, depression, weight gain, fatigue among others, chances are that you need to check your thyroid levels.
Diagnosing Thyroid Problems With Diagnostic Imaging
Roughly 6% of all Americans (20 million) have some type of thyroid condition and more than 60% of them are unaware of it. There are a variety of diagnostic imaging tests that can help your doctor determine if you have a thyroid issue including:
- Computerized Tomography (CT) scans – utilizes advanced technologies and X-rays to evaluate your thyroid gland’s size. A healthy and properly functioning thyroid gland isn’t normally visible externally. So, if you can see a lump just below your Adam’s apple at the base of the neck, contact your doctor immediately and schedule an appointment.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – this non-invasive procedure is a quick and very accurate technique for evaluating your thyroid gland’s shape and size. While it cannot evaluate its function, it can detect if the swelling in your neck is attributed to it. In some cases, a doctor will prescribe an MRI instead of a CT scan because it doesn’t involve exposure to radiation.
- Ultrasound – doctors and radiologists can create a clearer image of a thyroid gland by using a sound wave or ultrasound. If your physician feels that there is a cyst or mass on your thyroid gland, they may advise you have this done. An ultrasound can help medical professionals to determine if the cyst or mass is filled with fluid or is comprised of solid tissue.
Evaluation of Abnormalities with Thyroid Scans
Thyroid scans are used to evaluate any existing abnormalities found in laboratory tests or by physical examinations. These images can be extremely helpful when it comes to diagnosing the following conditions:
- Cysts, lumps, or other growths
- Goiter or abnormal enlargement of the gland
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
- Inflammation or swelling
- Thyroid cancer
Although it’s recommended to have your thyroid checked during Thyroid Awareness month, there are in-home testing kits available. To learn more, contact Vital Imaging at your earliest convenience today at 305.596.9992.
