Bone and Joint Health Action Week and What You Need to Know

If you’ve been struggling with back and joint pain, you’re not alone.  Statistics show that some of the most common problems that millions of individuals are suffering with are bone and joint issues.  Currently, one of the best information sources for the cause and prevention of these musculoskeletal ailments is Bone and Joint Health Action Week.  The event takes place every year between October 12th – 20th and focuses on the prevention and treatment of arthritis, back pain, osteoporosis, and pediatric conditions that affect bone health.

Bone and Joint Health Action Week helps to raise awareness regarding the prevention, management, and treatment of disorders affecting the musculoskeletal system such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Osteoporosis
  • Pediatric conditions
  • Spinal deformities
  • Trauma

According to the most recent statistics, bone and joint conditions affect over 50% of all Americans 18 years of age and older.  It is accompanied by chronic pain and suffering in most cases. It never helps to ignore these symptoms or injuries but consult with a doctor who would recommend MRI or other digital imaging to see the condition of the bones.

There are currently 5 days during Bone and Joint Health Action Week that have been dedicated to musculoskeletal disorders:

  • World Arthritis Day (October 12th) raises awareness about arthritis among caregivers, individuals suffering with the disease, medical professionals, policymakers, support groups, etc.
  • World Spine Day (October 16th) emphasizes the importance of improving posture and physical activity as a part of spinal injury prevention and the maintenance of proper spinal health.
  • World Trauma Day (October 17th) promotes educating the international community about effective intervention, prevention, and treatment of spinal cord injuries.
  • World Pediatric Bone and Joint or PB&J Day (October 19th) highlights the effect of pediatric bone and joint conditions on children while educating healthcare and medical professionals along with the general public about health issues involving the musculoskeletal system.
  • World Osteoporosis Day (October 20th) helps to increase awareness of the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of osteoporosis; emphasizes eating a bone-healthy diet, the importance of regular exercise where bone and muscle health are concerned, and why should talk with an orthopedist regarding osteoporosis.
